All Hallows Read – Halloween 2013

Last year was the first year I ever participated in All Hallows Read. If you’re not familiar with it, it is this cool concept that Neil Gaiman came up with, where on Halloween you give out at least one scary/Halloween-themed book to kids to help promote reading. Though it doesn’t have to just be kids, people are taking the concept and running with it, which is pretty cool too. But the idea is to promote reading among kids who might not be so excited about reading.

Now, I’m no fool, I don’t just give out books, I also give out little goody bags and then offer the books too. Last year I only gave away five books. I was heartbroken when one little girl looked me in the face and said, “I don’t like reading.” Yeah, this is what we’re working against.

I’ll admit, last year I was actually kind of nervous asking if kids wanted the books and often found myself not asking, especially if it was a huge group of kids at one time. Though often, once you drop the treat into their pail or bag, the kids turn and run too quick for you to say anything about the books. I found it was way easier to give the tiny tots books because their parents were right there and I could look at the parent and say, “Would s/he also like a Halloween picture book!?” And of course parents loved that.

But this year I decided to be more active and vocal about the books. And this year not ONE kid said no if I got the chance to ask. Yes, some still turned and ran before I had a chance to ask, but if they lingered just a second, that’s all I needed to quickly say, “I have books too! DO YOU LIKE SCARY BOOKS?!” Once again the parents of the tiny tots loved it and were happy to take the picture books, but the older kids surprised me so much. Last year, every single pre-teen and teenager said no when I asked if they wanted a book. But not this year.

I gave out seven copies of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline to kids ranging from 7 years old to 12 years old. I gave out four copies of Forest of Hands and Teeth to teens ranging from 13 years old to 15 years old. I gave out nine copies of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps to kids ranging from 7 years old all the way to 16 years old. And that 16yo zombie boy was my favorite. I looked at him, sad I didn’t have an “age appropriate” book for him because his friend got the last copy of Forest of Hands and Teeth and said, “You might be too old to want Goosebumps.” To which he replied, “No way! Never too old for Goosebumps!” And happily picked one from the stack.

I also gave out five copies of It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and around 10 copies of two different Witch-themed picture books to various tiny tots. And often, when I held out the choices, the kids (even as small as 2 years old) would pause and actually consider which book they’d like to pick.

At one point, I heard one mom say to another, “Oh yeah, I think they do that every year. They gave us a book last year.” That’s right, I’m developing a reputation which is fantastic. And very often I heard kids yell to their parents and friends, “I GOT A BOOK!” Which of course made me do a little Halloween dance. At one point a little girl yelled from our porch, “They’re giving out books!” And I was really worried she was warning people off but then five kids came running up for their books. I can’t even.

But more surprising? We ran out of goody bags because there were actually more trick-or-treaters this year than last, but we still had books. So when people came to the door, I apologized about being out of candy, but offered the books instead and you know what? They happily took the books. Not one kid said, “No thanks.” Not. One.

So I started out with nearly 40 books and now only have 5. This is amazing.

Gave away one more book right after I took this pic.

Will I or Won’t I – Ender’s Game

With the highly anticipated release of Ender’s Game, the internet has been abuzz with talk about this book to movie feature and, more vehemently, about Orson Scott Card.

The big question: Are you gonna see it?

Maybe you don’t know why this is such a big deal. It isn’t just your typical, “I hope they don’t ruin this awesome book,” concern. No, it all comes down to the author and who he is and what he does with his money. If you don’t know, I encourage you to Google, “Why is Orson Scott Card crazy?”

Mostly, I’m pretty liberal about what people do with their own lives. I mean, I’m not down with you telling me what I can and cannot do with my life, money or anything else, so who am I to tell you? But, I will not spend money on someone or something when I know that money will go towards something I wholeheartedly disagree with.

Orson Scot Card is a deplorable person, in my eyes. He actively works towards taking away people’s rights on things that I think everyone should have a right to. I’m sure we’ve only seen the very tip of the crazy iceberg that is OSC.

There are a few arguments about why some people, who, if they had known then what they know now wouldn’t have supported OSC’s career no matter how awesome his writing is, are saying they’re okay with spending money on the movie.

One of the big arguments is they can separate art from artist.  Mandy P., writer and awesome lady that she is, does a fantastic job of outlining this in her post about the same subject. Go check it out. Yes, she makes a very valid point that, as consumers, we more often than not buy things from artists without having any idea what their morals are or where their money goes. This is totally true. But for me, if I find out after the fact that the artist does things I find morally reprehensible, then no, I won’t keep buying. No, I won’t keep recommending. No, I won’t go see the movie based on their work. No, if I find out that their profit, which came from my buying their work, is going towards something I disagree with, no I won’t keep giving them money.

Another argument I’ve heard is, “Well, they already paid the guy, so  my ticket won’t make a difference.” No, maybe not one ticket, but the hundreds of thousands that are probably going to sell because so many people don’t know about OSC, will make a difference. Here’s the thing: OSC didn’t just write Ender’s Game; he wrote a lot of books. So in my mind, I think, “Well, if this movie does well, then the movie companies will be happy to offer him more movie deals with even bigger payouts.” So yeah, they paid him but you don’t know if his contract entitles him to a percentage of the profits or if the profitability of the movie will lead to more movie deals for him.

I’ll let you in on a secret. I’ve never read Ender’s Game. I know, le gasp! But it’s a Sci-Fi book and I am not a Sci-Fi nerd. I’m a Fantasy nerd. I did not read a lot of Sci-Fi growing up, but I do love me a good Sci-Fi flick, so if I hadn’t learned about OSC, and had only seen the previews for Ender’s Game, I probably would’ve gone to see it because it looks cool and there are so many actors I like attached to the movie. But I do know about OSC so I can’t support it. I mean, when we all found out about Chic-fil-a we were all up in arms and refusing to eat their delicious fried foods, why is art different? Yeah, our money was always going towards something we didn’t know about, but once we did we stopped going.

But we all have to make our own decisions and it is not for me to tell you to go or not to go. Make up your own mind, I did and there’s no changing it. I’ll keep my $15 out of OSC’s pocket and go see something with dragons or magic ’cause that’s my bag.

Reader Reactions and the Spoilers

photo-1

So a lot of people are freaking out about the end of the Divergent trilogy. I am a fan of this series, but in the middle of writing a new book and critiquing a massive epic fantasy, and trying to read the last in the Ashes trilogy during the Hallowe’en season, I don’t have time to read Allegiant right now.

But so many enraged readers have plastered the internet with spoilers and, even though I’ve tried not to read any, I do have a vague idea about what upset everyone and I am pissed.

I’m not pissed about what I think happens in the end, I am pissed that readers have taken away others’ chances to read it for themselves without ruining it for them. I agree that readers have a right to be angry if a writer does something they hate, but don’t believe they have the right to post spoilers the very same day the book comes out. Let other people read and react for themselves. Don’t take away all the anticipation and excitement.

So feel free to express your feelings, leave reviews based on how you felt and rate it appropriately, but there is no reason why you have to actually outline the end of a book, especially the last book in a series, in your review. Amazon has this feature where they highlight sentences out of reviews that they recognize reappearing in multiple reviews. This is how I saw the spoiler, yes, even though putting spoilers in reviews on Amazon is a TOS violation, so many came in so fast that the Amazon program highlighted the reviews as “popular.” So freaking bummed that people have taken this away from other fans.

ETA: Now I’m hearing some readers are so upset that they are actually THREATENING the author. Are you freaking kidding me? Do I really have to say that this isn’t okay, guys? You just read a book that made you so emotional, that actually touched you and you pay the author back by threatening her? Fuck that. Not cool.

Cover Reveal: Undead America – No Angels

images (1)I’m very excited to participate in this cover reveal! If you like zombies and awesomeness, get thee to your favorite book site and pick up the first in this series!

Without further ado:

noangels200x300

Jenna, Sam and Lola were lucky to survive the horrors of a zombie-filled New Orleans, but they still have a lot to learn about living in Undead America.

First, you can never let your guard down.  Even when you think you’re safe, dangers lurk around every corner. Sometimes the dangers are from the undead, but more often they’re from the living.

Next, it’s easier to inspire a group to fight for their lives than to lead them through everyday hardship. For Jenna, the pressure of managing an ever-growing group of survivors may be too much to survive.

And finally, in Undead America, no one is quite what they seem. Everyone has something to hide.

From the bowels of a rundown farmhouse to the plains of Nebraska, from a leather-clad human monster to the tiniest of child zombies, there are truly no angels.

Author Bio:

leahrhyneLeah Rhyne is a Jersey girl who’s lived in the South for long enough to say “ma’am” without irony. By day, she’s a writer, wife, and mom to a fantastically cool little girl. In her spare time, she loves to read, run and play fetch with her hound dog.

Leah grew up watching science fiction and horror flicks with her dad and brothers, and is most at home writing about monster-slaying and searching for lost universes.

Hallowe’en Contest and Giveaway

Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett

Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett

If you know me, then you know that my two favorite holidays are Hallowe’en, or Samhain if you like (I do) and Christmastime (or Solstice, if you like, and I do). Autumn starts this month, I celebrate six wonderful years of marriage with my hubs, and soon the temperatures will start to drop and everything pumpkin and spice will appear.

I Cannot. Wait.

In fact, I am so excited for the change in the season, I want to start giving out presents early!

Many of you know I am releasing a new novel in December, December 2nd to be exact. I’m pretty excited about this book. It’s a little different than anything I’ve ever written and I can’t wait for you guys to read it.

So here’s the contest: Pumpkin carving. Yes, that’s right. One of my favorite traditions of Samhain is carving pumpkins and letting the candles burn long into the night, chasing away the evil spirits that would cross the veil into our home.

148477_1708773278633_1217118393_1914634_6377389_n

Halloween 2010 (yes, that’s a pumpkin for my puppy!) – The Halloween of Jack Skellington (the two big pumpkins are two of Jack’s faces).

I take pumpkin carving very seriously so I will be a harsh judge. I’ll be taking a variety of factors into consideration, some of which will be creativity, scariness, humor, skill level, and originality. You can carve real pumpkins or fake, or even gourds. Carve one or ten. It doesn’t matter to me.

I will choose five, yes FIVE, winners. Each winner will receive an ebook copy of my new novel the first week of November. Did you get that? You will get my new book a whole month before it is released!!

The contest will run from 10/26-10/31. All you have to do is post the pic on my Facebook Page starting 10/26, any pics posted before 10/26 or after 10/31 will not be considered. You can also post your pictures on Instagram and tag  me, @dyingechoes, or you can tweet your picture at me at @dyingechoes! I will announce the winners here and on my FB page on 11/4 – I will request emails of the  winners and their preferred ebook file and send out the books as soon as I get replies.

Here’s the catch: if you enter the contest you agree that, should you win, you will read and review the book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble no later than 12/7/12. That will give you 5 full weeks to read the book and write your review. Once the book is live on both sites, I will re-email the winners with links to make your job easier. There are no rules about the length of the review – just write what you want (yes, long reviews are great, but I want you to be yourselves) and if it turns out you just HATE the book and your review turns negative, that’s okay. I have a stash of chocolate and wine, I’ll get through it. Obviously I hope you love the book as much as you all loved The Elemental Series, but I do want your reviews to be honest more than anything.

Pumpkins everywhere!!!

Obviously there’s little I can do if you break your end of the deal and don’t put up a review. Just know I’ll be sad and disappointed and you’ll feel the weight of my wide, sad eyes. (Oh, and you’ll feel awkward and wont ever want to enter another one of my contests again, because you know, I’ll remember you broke our deal.)

So, any questions? Put ’em in the comments here and I’ll answer them.

Bloggers! I am scheduled with YA Bound for a blog tour running the first two weeks of December. So you can get your free copy through them and participate in the blog tour (I love all my bloggers, but I want to give readers a chance at a free book that they wouldn’t normally get). AND I WANT ALL OF YOU TO SIGN UP FOR THE TOUR, PRETTY PLEASE!

All three

Halloween 2011 – Zero for the puppy – Hubs was so proud of his puking pumpkin…

And one more because I love it! Last year was our first Halloween with two puppies so of course, we had to have two puppy pumpkins (I’m sorry for the crappy quality!)

Two of our pumpkins from 2012 – Our first year with TWO puppies so we carved Frankenweenie and Scraps!

Photo tour week three: Water

Welcome to the third installment of our photo tour! This week: Water – Book Two in the Elemental Series. This will probably be one of the shorter posts since most of the book’s major locations were underwater, but hopefully I’ve caught enough shots to make it entertaining for you.

In the very beginning we are brought on a dawn patrol surf session with Shayna at her favorite break: Surfers’ Point

Dawn at the beach is a wondrous, beautiful thing.

(click the image to see a larger version)

Each of these were taken at Surfers’ Point and gives you an idea of the changing moods of our beach.

Later, Shayna chases down a woman, frantically looking for her lost child. Little does Shay realize, the area known as “River Mouth” would be where she spend the majority of her time on her summer break.

River Mouth, where fresh water meets the sea.

And later we would see the beautiful beaches of Emma Wood. Emma has a special place in my heart because that was where my dad taught me how to boogie board and was one of the first places I went surfing with my husband. And if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods, Emma is one of the nicest spots to watch the sunset.

So many beautiful beaches in our county, I just wish we were lucky enough to get seashells :). Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this installment!

Photo Tour for Air: Book Two in the Elemental Series

Welcome to week two of our photo tour! Today I’m featuring the real life locations that inspired many of the places in Air: Book Two.

First up the shopping center with the movie theater and cafe where we first meet Jeremy and his invisible friends.
Then of course we have our favorite bookstore…
Which turns into a rather scary place when an unstable Jeremy looses his cool…
And then flees by jumping off the exterior balcony.
Unfortunately a lot of the other locales were made up. Much of what happened in this book were in private homes and then of course, in the Shide. None of which I could photograph.

Photo Tour of Earth: Book One in the Elemental Seires

Hello my lovelies! Today is the first installment of the photo tour of the real life places of the locations featured in the Elemental Series! First up: Earth. Mind you that I’m just showing your real places. I did make up some places, pulled them right out of my imagination. Like the high school – that place was an amalgamation of all the high schools in the district, so no pics of that.

Unfortunately when June 1st rolled around, Ventura decided to be very literal about June Gloom. It had been sunny and warm and pretty for weeks until June 1st, so some of these pics look a little dreary and I’m sorry for that.
So without further ado!
The Oak Ash and Thorn, featured in all five books was actually based on Journey Home, our local metaphysical shop. I have been going to this shop since I was six years old. Sadly, the exterior isn’t the prettiest.

In the beginning of the book the trio goes to a greasy spoon restaurant before they perform their first casting of the series. I give you Main St Cafe. Fun fact: this is the same restaurant from Erin Brockavich!

And you’ll recall when they were finished with their meal they took some food to go for their friend and lookout, Byron. This is Byron’s bench and beyond that, the first place we see the trio cast their first spells of the series.
And though the reason the three are seeking out the cause of the disruption of their quiet town and looking for someone performing blood magic, the drive down the coast to the first location is always beautiful.
(Many car companies film their commercials along this stretch of road.)
Later, the trio goes on the hunt for the guy causing all the ruckus in town, performing blood magic and trying to lure girls into the woods.
